Top News of the Week

Support comes from an unlikely source this week as a notably conservative politician’s daughter publicly endorses marijuana legalization, while New York takes great steps in legalizing medical marijuana. Rhode Island meanwhile lessens the punishment for possessing marijuana; possessing an ounce or less will become a civil violation with a $150, like a ticket. Read on for the full stories.

Meghan McCain Speaks Out in Support of Legalization

The Arizona conservative Senator’s daughter went on a cross-country roadtrip with liberal comedian Michael Ian Black. They toured cultural sites, discussed gay marriage and gun rights, and wrote it all down for us to read in America, You Sexy Bitch: A Love Letter to Freedom.

On the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, she discusses why she supports the legalization of marijuana:

California Hospital Denies transplant for Legal MMJ User

Patient Toni Trujillo has been on the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s transplant list waiting for a kidney for six years…until now. Trujillo has been using medical marijuana legally for two years to stimulate her appetite and increase and maintain protein levels while on dialysis, yet she was removed from the list for “substance abuse.”

This isn’t the first time this has happened, either.  Last year the hospital removed a man with inoperable liver cancer from their transplant list for the same reason – legally smoking marijuana. Without the transplant, doctors expect him to die within 90 days.

From DrugFree.org:
Sally Stewart, a spokesperson for the hospital, said marijuana users can be exposed to a type of mold that can cause deadly disease among patients whose immune systems are compromised. They also are at risk of a fatal lung infection after transplantation, she told the newspaper. “We do not make a moral or ethical judgment about people who are smoking medical marijuana. Our concern is strictly for the health and safety of our patients,” she said.

NY General Assembly Approves Medical Marijuana Bill; RI Decriminalizes

The same day that Rhode Island Governor Chafee signed a bill to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana, the New York State Assembly approved a bill to allow qualified patients to possess medical marijuana. The vote passed 90-50, setting a positive note for the Senate vote. Similar legislation have previously been stopped twice in the Senate, but supporters are optimistic for AB7347’s passing. Tell your New York Senator to support the bill here.

The Silver Tour Brings MMJ Awareness to Florida Seniors

silvertour-logo

Seniors notoriously get out to the polls, engage with their state representatives, and have a strong voice in politics.  Robert Platshorn speaks with The Silver Tour to educate seniors on the benefits of medical marijuana and urges them to let their representatives know that they support legalization.

Robert Platshorn was imprisoned for 30 years, which is the longest sentence ever served for a nonviolent marijuana offense.  Now free and in Florida with his wife, he dedicates his time to activism. The Silver Tour website is an incredible resource with links to research on cannabis therapy as well as educational videos from reputable doctors on topics from how it works to the uses in specific medical conditions.

As Platshorn stated, “Nobody in the marijuana movement is talking to seniors [yet] seniors are the only damn people that go to the polls.” The Silver Tour is endorsed by NORML and High Times, and The Wall Street Journal proves why: his presentations are effective.

Roberta Feinman, 76 years old, said the presentation had dispelled some of her misgivings. “I thought marijuana was only for kids that are, you know, pot heads,” she said. “I would consider [cannabis] to go to sleep if it were legal.” After seeing the presentation, Ms. Yeshion was sold. “I want to get some cannabis,” she said afterward, with a big smile. “I have pain in my back, so it would be nice. Damn it to hell, I want to try it once in my lifetime.”

The Wall Street Journal covers Platshorn’s cause:

weGrow Store Compassionate Use Activist Overview

Mike Sugarman and well known bay area newscaster

Medical marijuana has been decriminalized in 15 states, here at weGrow Store we want to inform every person in the US that medical marijuana exists. It’s a real thing, helping real patients. We want to approach doubters with facts about medical marijuana. Facts like the medium age of a medical marijuana patient in California is over 40 years old. It’s not just young people getting a doctor’s recommendation simply to get high. We want people to know that raids on dispensaries have dropped 40% under the current administration. A senator in Colorado has authored a bill to make marijuana legal on the federal level. We want to remind medical marijuana patients that medical marijuana stands to get legalized on it’s own grounds, just as recreational use does, on it’s own grounds. Stick to the task at hand and advocate the legalization of medical marijuana in  a regulated fashion. As our industry matures we’ll see useful regulations being set up.

Trucks broadcasting about medical marijuana from wegrow

In recent federal court proceedings against Dr. Molly Fry the jurors were excluded from the jury if they knew anything about California’s medical marijuana laws. Dr. Fry has since been found guilty of cultivation of around 40 plants, which normally falls into the under 99 plant limit threshold that would exclude federal prosecution. In this case they aggregated previous year’s crops, which over the course of 3 years put her over the 99 plant limit. Molly started her 5 year sentence last month, to the angst of most activists.

That’s just part of the reason we approached the media about getting the word out. For those that have never heard of medical marijuana it’s a normalization of a business that helped feed this country and beautified neighborhoods across the nation. For medical marijuana patients it brings them together in a festive venue where community gatherings become a fun chance to mingle with the like minded.

And it’s not just in the US. Coverage across the globe from Mexico, Japan, UK, France and other countries puts our patient message out globally. With recent events like what’s going on in Montana there’s never been a better reason to build on our common interest and devote ourselves into medical marijuana patient solidarity.
